One of the things people remember most about NIGHTMARE is the show's opening sequence. After an extreme close-up of Gorgon's eyes, which opened wide at the announcer's line "welcome to... NIGHTMARE!" accompanied by a thunderclap, the camera moved slowly down a dark, scary hallway. At the end of the hall was complete darkness and the primal fear it conjured up was a delightfully creepy feeling that viewers relished week after week. |

The hallway used for NIGHTMARE's opening was actually an ingenius miniature. The rows of mysterious doors, as well as the lights and shadows were painted on. There was an opening in the top of one door through which flashes of lightning shown on the opposite wall. The ominus music and sound effects added the frightening finishing toughes.
Above and right are parts of an original NIGHTMARE script by Bill Camfield for his presentation of Son of Frankenstein. Above are the lines that opened each show followed by directions for that weeks opening scene. To the right is part of Camfield's script for Gorgon's introduction for the movie. Below is the full script to NIGHTMARE's presentation of Son of Frankenstein GORGON: This, my dear friends, is the final resting place of the great and famous scientist ... Baron Von Frankenstein. As you can se by the mutilation of his crypt ... his memory is not hallowed by the citizens of this small village. They remember... my friends ... remember the evil monster that emerged from Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory. They will not soon forget the hideous giant that stalked the streets... searching for human life. The monster that killed without mercy ... ripping with unbelievable strength, the hearts from his screaming victims.
The being that Dr. Frankenstein created ... the Frankenstein monster ... has haunted the nightmares of two generations. Who knows how many victims he has claimed... Who knows how many more could have met a terrifying death ... by fear... Simply by dreaming of the Frankenstein monster. I know that you find the creation of monsters an interesting science... that is why I have asked you to meet me here. Tonight I will show you a secret... a secret long kept. Since you have been faithful, I believe you deserve to know. To know what final fate befell history's most feared monster.

Why did I save it? Let us say, simply that I wanted a momento of the place where the Frankenstein monster perished. One can never tell when it might be... useful! I hope, my friends, that you among the future victims of the Frankenstein monster... the victims that die of fright... the victims that fall into a deep and fitful sleep... and perish in agony before they wake... and followed into their dreams by the Frankenstein monster. (LAUGH) If you survive the long dark nights... let me invite you to to a special treat. This Wednesday night at seven o'clock on channel 11 you will see a dear and familiar friend again.
